Tag-Connect’s new TC2050-IDC Plug-of-NailsTM Cable eliminates bulky JTAG connectors – now compatible with ARM Cortex M3, MSP430 and most other programmable devices

In-Circuit Programming and Debug Cables connect directly to a tiny pattern of copper pads and holes in the PCB, saving both the space and the expense of a programming connector on every board.

Tag-Connect today announced availability of their latest Plug-of-NailsTM in-circuit debug / programming cable which connects directly to a tiny PCB footprint of copper pads and locating holes which eliminate the requirement and expense of a mating programming connector on every PCB.

“The greenest connector is no connector!” said Tag-Connect’s president Neil Sherman. “It makes no sense to have increasingly smaller and finer pitch MCU packages when among the biggest and most costly components on many boards are the programming connectors typically used only one time!”

The 10-pin TC2050-IDE extends Tag-Connect’s Plug-of-Nails™ range to also cover devices such as ARM Cortex M3, TI’s MSP430, Freescale BDM as well as most other programmable MCU’s, FPGA’s, CPLD’s and other logic devices.

The patent-pending spring-pin cables are available in both “legged” and “no-legs” versions. The “legged” versions have plastic retaining feet that snap into holes in the PCB and securely hold the connector in place during prolonged programming or debugging session. The “no legs” versions are designed to be hand-held during a production programming operation.

Tag-Connects already successful TC2030-MCP 6-pin cables are natively compatible with most Microchip PIC® and dsPIC® debuggers and programmers and a range of adaptor boards makes them suitable for use with MSP430 SPY-BI-WIRE, AVR, Renesas H8, 2-wire JTAG and many others.

The PCB footprint required can be as tiny as 0.02 square inches, roughly the same amount of board space required by an 0805 surface-mount resistor, making it perfect for space-constrained designs such as implantable medical devices, and consumer devices.

Tag-Connect’s Plug-of-NailsTM connectors have spring-pins rated for over 100,000 operations making them ideal for use in production and development environments.
