Tag-Connect today announced that they are extending their Plug-of-Nails™ range of in-circuit debug / programming cables to include a 14-pin version (expected early Q2 2012). Plug-of-Nails™ puts Bed-of-Nails spring-pin technology into an easy to use connector and is the answer to a problem that has long been sought for in the industry.

As well as eliminating the need for the traditional programming header, Tag-Connectors also typically reduce most of the required PCB space to be as little as 0.02 sq inches – not much bigger that the footprint of an 0805 SMT resistor. Since the tiny footprints have no vertical height or volume, they can be placed on the underside of a board where physical constraints might otherwise disallow use of a traditional connector.

Tag-Connect also announced a new ARM SWD adapter expected March 2012 for Cortex M3 which allows use of 6-pin TC2030 cables with a 0.02 square inch footprint to program popular ARM devices. This is in addition to their standard 20-pin adapter that uses the 10-pin TC2050 cables with footprints as tiny as 0.03 sq. inches.

Using Tag-Connectors is a No Header – No Brainer!”

The patented spring-pin cables are available in both “legged” and “no-legs” versions. The “legged” versions have plastic retaining feet that snap into holes in the PCB and securely hold the connector in place during prolonged programming or debugging sessions. The “no legs” versions are designed to be hand-held or held in a jig for production programming operations.

A growing range of adapters allows the standard Tag-Connect cables to be used with most families of MCU’s, FPGA’s and programmable devices, and a special mini-HDMI Tag-Connect cable exists for use with Altium’s cross-platform USB JTAG programmer. Tag-Connectors are also a great way of providing test-signal access, such as SPI and IIC.

The Plug-of-Nails™ connectors use custom manufactured spring-pins rated for over 100,000 operations making them ideal for both production and development environments.
