Laird’s BL654 Series Module, Now at Mouser, Delivers NFC, BLE, and Thread Communication for IoT Devices

With modular FCC, IC, CE, MIC, RCM and Bluetooth®SIG approvals, the compact, ultra-low-powerdevice allows developers to add NFC, Bluetooth low energy (BLE) 5.0, and 802.15.4 Thread support in a variety of small, power-conscious applications, including medical devices, fitness sensors, smart home, and other Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

The Laird BL654 Series module, available from Mouser Electronics, is based on the highly flexible multi-protocol Nordic nRF52840 system-on-chip (SoC). The nRF52840 SoC employs a 32-bit Arm®Cortex®-M4F processor plus support for the Bluetooth 5 specification to provide a single-chip solution that boasts low power consumption and improved wireless range through +8 dBm of transmit power. Available with either an internal trace antenna or external IPEX MHF4 connector, the BL654 module integrates BLE mesh capabilities in a high-transmit-power platform, enabling the development of new applications for low-power, long-range mesh sensor networks.

The BL654 module can be programmed using either Laird’s smartBASIC language or Nordic’s nRF5 software development kit (SDK) for Thread. The smartBASIC language, ideal for memory-constrained applications, cuts time to market by enabling fast and efficient BLE development. The Nordic SDK offers a library of source code and device profiles for study and emulation.

The BL654 module is supported by the BL654 development kits, also available with either an internal trace antenna or external IPEX MHF4 connector. Enabling rapid wireless connectivity prototyping, the kit offers multiple power supply options, including USB, external DC supply, and batteries.
