STMicroelectronics and Audi Co-operate to Accelerate Automotive Semiconductor Innovation

Joint focus on driving innovative energy saving, safety and infotainment solutions

Industry analysts regularly report the increasing value of electronics and semiconductor content in cars. Freescale and eSOL to collaborate on software solutions for Vybrid automotive devices Software platform to interconnect automotive infotainment and control applications

Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE: FSL) and eSOL, a leading developer of real-time embedded software solutions, announced today that they would collaborate to provide software solutions for Freescale’s automotive Vybrid devices. Asymmetric dual-core Vybrid devices can simultaneously run both a real-time application and a multimedia application. eSOL has developed a software platform for automotive Vybrid devices, enabling customers to effectively develop both AUTOSAR-compatible real-time applications that communicate with electronic control units (ECUs) and infotainment applications that use a separate OS, for example, ITRON. The platform also provides the function of linking the two domains safely and efficiently. These unique features make the solution ideal for driver information systems, including instrument clusters, automotive connected radio platforms, car navigation systems and rear view cameras, enabling various advanced functions and services, such as driving assistance using the ECU vehicle information and linkage with smartphones or automotive equipment.

Freescale and eSOL will exhibit the software solution in the eSOL booth (booth number: AT-14) at the Freescale Technology Forum Japan 2012 (FTF Japan 2012) on October 22-23, 2012, at the Prince Park Tower Tokyo (Minato-ku, Tokyo).

Freescale’s Vybrid controller solutions are built on a unique asymmetrical-multiprocessing-architecture platform that leverages the company’s heritage as a leader in microcontroller (MCU) development and multicore design. The Vybrid platform integrates the ARM® Cortex™-A and Cortex-M cores, reducing complexity and cost while increasing system security for automotive applications. Vybrid controller solutions, along with i.MX applications processors, give Freescale an unparalleled breadth of scalable solutions based on the ARM architecture for automotive driver information systems. Vybrid controller solutions are designed to bring connected radios, infotainment systems and reconfigurable instrument clusters to mainstream automobiles and provide reference software that accelerates the time to market.

eSOL has ported to the Cortex-M4 core the AUTOSAR basic software (BSW) of the AUTOSAR methodology support tool "eSOL ECUSAR,” and in a sample application, implemented the feature of retrieving the vehicle information from the ECU via the CAN communication. In the future, eSOL ECUSAR, which can automatically generate AUTOSAR BSW, will be optimized to fully support the Vybrid devices and made commercially available according to market needs. As for multimedia applications on the ARM Cortex-A5 core, eSOL T-Kernel-based software platform "eCROS" has been implemented, which integrates various middleware and development tools on the real-time OS "eT-Kernel" – a successor of TRON architecture. eCROS has been adopted in a wide range of automotive information systems, including car navigation systems, car audio devices, drive recorders and around-vehicle monitors, and it supports "MirrorLink," a linkage technology for car navigations systems and smartphones. Moreover, the sample application helps establish communication between an ARM Cortex-A5 core and an ARM Cortex-M4 core; therefore, the vehicle information retrieved in one application can be shared with the other (see Figure 1). In the future, features necessary for driver information systems, such as a sophisticated graphics capability, will be added to further evolve the software platform.

In addition to the software platform, eSOL provides professional services based on its track record and experience in vehicle information systems, including AUTOSAR and functional safety, and in control systems. Through this support, Freescale and eSOL help customers develop automotive software based on Vybrid automotive solutions.

ST Innovation Brings Digital Amplifiers to the Dashboard for Better In-Car Audio, Energy Efficiency and Space Savings

Full-digital amplifier family begins with 4x135W and 4x50W systems on chip,
enabling a new generation of class-D car audio products

STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), a global semiconductor leader serving customers across the spectrum of electronics applications and the world’s leading supplier of automotive audio power amplifier chips¹, has revealed the industry’s first full-digital audio-amplifier system-on-chip family suitable for use in dash-mounted sound-system control panels in the car.

Class-D amplifiers achieve about 80% higher energy efficiency than analog class-AB amplifiers. This greater efficiency helps reduce the electrical load on the alternator and can allow extra functions or speaker channels within standardized enclosure dimensions. Historically, cost, pc-board size and EMI issues have confined automotive class-D applications to high-power booster amplifiers. Overcoming these barriers, ST’s full-digital amplifier ICs now allow popular in-car equipment to deliver powerful high-quality audio experiences.

ST’s new audio amplifiers also enhance the audio performance of high-power boosters and integrate circuitry to allow continuous, undistorted playback in vehicles using stop-start engine technology, or in hybrid vehicles as the electrical traction drives and combustion engine switch between various operating modes.

As the first devices of their kind to feature an integrated digital input, the 4x135W FDA4100LV and the 4x50W FDA450LV require no signal conversion or filtering circuitry, saving pc-board space and component count. In addition, engineering challenges such as EMI reduction are addressed inside the chips. ST’s patented feedback loop saves the need for a large output filter, and also allows use in diverse OEM and aftermarket products by reducing dependence on speaker type. Patented features reduce electro-magnetic interference with the tuner and also simplify end-product certification to automotive electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards CEI EN 55025 and ISO 11452-2 (2004).

ST has also indicated plans to expand its FDA full digital amplifier family in the future, starting with a 2-channel device early in 2013.

Freescale Introduces Seven Development Kits to Ease the Design of Automotive Motor Control Applications

Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE: FSL) today introduced a new series of fully loaded motor control development kits, offering developers one of the most integrated automotive permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) or brushless DC (BLDC) motor control solutions on the market today. The first development kits in the series feature Freescale’s Qorivva 32-bit microcontrollers (MCUs) built on Power Architecture® technology and include hardware and software that help reduce the time needed to develop automotive motor control applications such as HVAC blowers, electric power steering, engine cooling fans, fuel, water and oil pumps and wipers.

The motor control development kit series offers a full breadth of multi-functional, scalable solutions that can be tailored for a customer’s unique automotive motor control needs. The initial motor control development kits are powered by the latest Qorivva 32-bit MCUs, including the MPC560xP, MPC564xL and MPC560xB families and feature the latest motor control peripherals such as FlexPWM, CTU, ADC and eTimer modules. Customers can take advantage of these modules to develop a deterministic motor control application with minimal core impact. Integral to the development kits’ software are the motor control algorithms that control the speed and motor current depending on customer demands. The Automotive Math and Motor Control Library’s modular architecture makes it easy to port the application software across the MCU families and reduce software development time by providing a precompiled software library that contains the building blocks for a wide range of motor control and automotive embedded applications.

Microchip Technology Inc., a leading provider of microcontroller, analog and Flash-IP solutions, today announced new additions to the 70 MIPS dsPIC33E and PIC24E product families, building on Microchip’s motor control and general-purpose device series that include integrated Op Amps and a Charge Time Measurement Unit (CTMU) for temperature sensing or mTouch™ capacitive touch sensing.  The devices feature 70 MIPS of performance for motor control, sensing, actuators and other embedded applications.  The new Digital Signal Controllers (DSCs) and microcontrollers include pin and feature compatible devices ranging from 32-256 KB of Flash memory, enabling designers to easily migrate within the family.  These devices are also code compatible with Microchip’s existing dsPIC33F products, providing a migration path from 40 to 70 MIPS.

The new dsPIC33E and PIC24E devices enable motor control designers to reduce the costs of high-performance motor control systems with cost-effective 70 MIPS devices that include innovative technology.  New on-chip peripherals, such as integrated Op Amps, reduce board space and the need for external components.  These Op Amps can be used in a variety of sensing applications where signal amplification is required.  With a rich feature set and low cost, the dsPIC33E and PIC24E devices can be used in sensor, communications, automotive, industrial and emerging applications.

Development Support

Microchip’s extensive suite of easy-to-use development tools is compatible with the dsPIC33E and PIC24E devices. For motor control, the low voltage dsPICDEM MCLV-2 Development Board (part # DM330021-2, $199) and high voltage dsPICDEM MCHV-2 Development System (part # DM330023-2, $699) are available today to provide designers with motor control development systems that enable customers to take full advantage of the internal Op Amps.  Both motor control development boards use Plug-In Module (PIM) daughter cards which can be easily interchanged to support different configurations, with or without integrated Op Amps.  Microchip offers two motor-control PIMs to support these development boards, the dsPIC33EP256MC506 External OpAmp Motor Control PIM (part # MA330031-2, $25) and the dsPIC33EP256MC506 Internal OpAmp Motor Control PIM (part #MA330031, $25), both of which are available today.

For customers developing applications other than motor control, Microchip offers the dsPIC33EP256GP506 General Purpose PIM (part # MA330030, $25), which is designed to work with Microchip’s modular Explorer 16 Development Platform.

Industry’s First Touch Solution for Gloved Finger Operation Now Supports Touchpads Up to 7 Inches in Automobiles

Atmel® Corporation (NASDAQ: ATML) has announced new automotive-qualified maXTouch® controllers for in-car control systems. These new devices will bring today’s smartphone experience into contemporary cars, even for drivers wearing gloves. Expanding the Atmel portfolio of maXTouch automotive-qualified devices, the new mXT143E and mXT224E touch controllers are designed for small automotive touchscreens and touchpads up to 7 inches in diameter such as center stack displays, navigation systems, radio human-machine interfaces (HMIs) and rear-seat entertainment systems.

By addressing smaller screen and touch-pad sizes, the mXT143E and mXT224E controllers complement the company’s growing family of automotive-qualified touchscreen controllers that support screens/pads from 2 to 12 inches in diameter.

With these new automotive-qualified maXTouch devices, Atmel strengthens its position as a market-leading touch innovator and supplier. The maXTouch family is known for its superior performance and rich feature set, including unlimited touches, fast response time, touch precision, robust operation and low power consumption.

Dedicated Embedded Functionality for Automotive
The mXT143E and mXT224E are fully automotive-qualified according to AEC-Q100. The touchscreen controllers provide embedded functionalities that meet specific automotive design requirements, including high-temperature behavior and reliable operation in harsh environments and with gloved fingers.

The high signal-to-noise ratio of 80:1 makes these devices ideal for very noisy environments. The devices provide full support for gloved hand operation on automotive touchscreens and pads.

The mXT143E and mXT224E embed X/Y position calculation as well as post-processing algorithms such as eliminating unintended touches. With touchscreens and pads based on these new maXTouch controllers, users can perform multi-touch gestures (pinch, stretch, etc.), while unintended touches, such as a resting hand on the screen, are rejected.

The devices feature true 12-bit touch functionality with independent X/Y tracking for up to 10 concurrent touches in real–time, allowing for the highest linearity and accuracy. Adaptation to high-resolution displays is easy and quick. The user-configurable ratio of X and Y lines supports a variety of aspect ratios from 4:3 to 16:9.

“Atmel brings the consumer touch experience into the automobile, even when drivers are wearing gloves,” said Stephan Thaler, marketing director for automotive touch products, Atmel Corporation. “With the new mXT143E and mXT224E devices, also smaller automotive touch applications, such as touchscreens and curved touchpads in the center stack, are made possible with just one single controller, reducing development time, system complexity and cost for the system designer.”

Additional maXTouch capabilities targeting automotive applications include frequency hopping during burst generation, self calibration, detect integration addressing EMI/EMC requirements and high reliability in harsh environments. With a scan speed of up to 280Hz, design engineers can provide character recognition for alpha-numeric inputs to the automotive HMI interfaces, another key feature for modern cars.


Samples of automotive-qualified mXT143E and mXT224E touch controllers are available now in TQFP48 packages. Mass production will start the end of October 2012. Demo kits for both devices are also available to support design-in and shorten time to market.

Agilent Technologies to Demonstrate Automotive Functional Test System at Expo

Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) will feature the PXI-based TS-8900 Automotive Functional Test System at the Automotive Testing Expo (Booth 12024), Oct. 23-25, at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, Mich.

“The TS-8900 is an excellent fit for automotive test applications,” said Doru Popescu, U.S. marketing program manager for Agilent’s Electronic Measurement Group. “This high-performance PXI-based test platform provides our automotive customers with higher test throughput and improved test coverage while reducing capital equipment costs for automotive electronics functional testing.”
