Next-Generation Embedded-Flash Microcontrollers from STMicroelectronics Drive Car Safety and Security to a New Level

Multi-core microcontrollers enable functional safety and encryption in automotive systems

STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), a global semiconductor leader serving customers across the spectrum of electronics applications and a top supplier of automotive ICs, today announced new members in its multi-core microcontroller (MCU) family aimed at making cars safer. These new devices are the first to be launched with ST’s proprietary in-house 40nm embedded Flash process.

The new automotive MCUs combine compliance with the most stringent automotive safety standards[1], encryption for security, and increased memory size for the storage of vital programs and data, strengthening ST’s product line of fault-tolerant microcontrollers for demanding applications throughout the car. These mission-critical applications include engine management, transmission, anti-lock braking, electric power steering, active suspension, and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

Part of ST’s Power Architecture™ single-chip 32-bit automotive-MCU family, the SPC58NE product line combines multiple high-performance dual-issue cores with up to 6MB Flash and 768kB internal RAM memory, eight CAN (Controller Area Network) interfaces, and an optimized peripheral set based on the end application. The multiple cores ensure redundancy in these most-important applications to meet the safety and security demands of vehicle manufacturers—and consumers.

The SPC58NE product line is currently available in BGA 292 and LQFP176 package configurations. KGD versions are also planned in the near future. E2S Warning Signals gains additional global approvals for the E2x series of signals.

The E2x series of high performance non-sparking alarm horn sounders, Xenon strobe beacons and combined devices from E2S, the world’s leading independent manufacturer of warning signals, have gained approval for Zone 2, 22 applications to the latest IECEx and ATEX standards for gas and dust applications, complementing its existing Class I & II Division 2 UL and cULs approvals. The main enclosure is manufactured from lightweight, corrosion proof PPS, and the re-entrant horns from high impact, fire retardant ABS. Selected models are available with the innovative 360° radial horn option. The robust construction and electronics with certification from the world’s leading approval bodies ensure that the E2x signals can be installed in the harshest of operating environments with complete confidence.

The series consists of powerful 45 tone, three channel/stage electronic alarm horn sounders with an output of up to 121dB(A) @ 1 meter (112dB(A) @ 10ft/3m) – multi-horn installations feature automatic synchronization of the alarm tones on all devices on the same circuit. E2x visual signals include Xenon strobe 5 and 10 Joule beacons, available with a choice of six lens colors, provide up to 1,000,000 peak candela. Combination signals offer a SPL of 116dB(A) @ 1 meter (107dB(A) @ 10ft/3m) with a 5 Joule Xenon strobe, providing an efficient and cost-effective audible and visual signal in a one device. For PA applications the E2x loudspeakers are available as 15 or 25W in either line transformer or low impedance versions.

Operating voltages include 12, 24 or 48Vdc and 115 or 230Vac. Dual cable entries, either M20x1.5 or ½ inch NPT (or a combination of both sizes) facilitate easy installation and in-out wiring configurations. The mounting bracket permits the product to be angled in the optimum orientation and along with the beacon lens guard, is available in standard 304 (A2) or enhanced corrosion-resistant 316 (A4) stainless steel.

The DLP3000-Q1 chipset consists of a DLP 0.3-inch wide video graphics array (WVGA) digital micromirror device (DMD) and DLPC120 controller and enables a new generation of HUD with benefits that include:

The widest FOV in the industry:

  • The flexibility of the DLP3000-Q1 allows for the industry’s widest FOV HUD range, up to 12 degrees. A wide FOV HUD of this range allows augmented-reality elements such as navigational indicators and real-time landmark details to be displayed in the driver’s line of sight – with a depth perception of 2 to 20 meters ahead – to help keep the driver focused on the road.

Outstanding brightness, dynamic range and color accuracy:

  • A HUD based on the DLP3000-Q1 features the same core technology that powers more than eight out of 10 digital movie theater screens worldwide. This results in a HUD capable of producing 15,000 candela per square meters (cd/m2) of brightness, a dynamic dimming range of 5,000:1, high contrast >1,000:1 full on/full off (FOFO) and 125 percent National Television System Committee (NTSC) color-gamut performance that will not degrade over temperature for clear images in various viewing scenarios over the typical life of the vehicle.
  • In addition, DLP technology does not require polarization of light which helps automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) design in HUDs with displays that are visible while wearing polarized eye-wear.

Scalability:

  • Because DLP technology is light source-agnostic, it can leverage reliable light-emitting diodes (LEDs) while providing a future path to using lasers once they are available for automotive-qualified HUD applications.
    In addition, with the DLP3000-Q1 as the core component of the HUD picture generation unit (PGU), the whole system can be integrated into a variety of mechanical form factors such as a windshield or combiner HUDs. This is possible, across vehicle model lines, potentially resulting in greater returns on manufacturers’ investments.
  • To accelerate end-product development, TI maintains an extensive ecosystem of design houses. Broadens Deployment From Premium Vehicles to Volume Car Models; Began Using MOST Technology in 2001 for Infotainment Networks

2014 Automotive Semiconductors Supplier Rankings Adjusted Based on Further Analysis, IHS Says

2015 expected to present some changes based on recent M&A activity

Leaders in the automotive semiconductor market experienced exceptional results and growth in 2014, according to updated analysis from IHS (NYSE: IHS). Now that final financial reports have been made and analyzed, IHS has adjusted its final rankings of these suppliers (originally reported in January) to accommodate some missed expectations in Europe, as well as currency exchange rates and unexpected strong growth at the end of 2014 by some suppliers.

“For 2015, IHS expects to see a shift among the leading suppliers in this category, given the recent merger of Freescale and NXP, two large players in the market,” said Luca de Ambroggi, principal analyst, automotive semiconductors at IHS. “We’re also keeping a close eye on the integration of Infineon and International Rectifier, following their similar announcement earlier this year.”

Based on final analysis of 2014 results, Renesas maintained its leadership position as the number one supplier in 2014, according to IHS analysis of reported company revenues. A strong finish to the year resulted in growth to its automotive revenue and exceeded all expectations. Key segments for Renesas include microcontrollers (MCUs) and logic integrated circuits (logic IC) categories, as 39 percent of all vehicles include a Renesas MCU, with a 16 percentage point lead on its nearest competitor. Renesas’ work in providing semiconductors in all segments, including infotainment, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), body and convenience and powertrain systems continues to lead its global growth efforts.

In second place for 2014, Infineon revenue grew more than 11.7 percent in 2014, based on its strong presence in powertrain, chassis and safety, as well as body and convenience categories within the auto sector. It also supports further electrification in vehicles through power management ICs, MCUs and modules. The complementary products of International Rectifier and Infineon will reinforce Infineon’s future position in the key growing applications of hybrid electric vehicles and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

Rounding out the top three, STMicroelectronics saw robust growth of nearly 9 percent in 2014, in part due to its leadership in the Analog IC category for chassis and safety, powertrain, infotainment, body and convenience components. In addition, its second ranking in the logic IC category provides components primarily for infotainment solutions, including audio amplifiers and digital radio receivers. It also grew significantly in China, which contributed to its overall global growth in 2014. Engine and transmission management are also key application areas for STMicroelectronics, as its sensors business also is growing, including in accelerometers for airbags and combination motion sensors for future active safety applications. Additionally, STMicroelectronics is the foundry for Mobileye’s silicon solutions, which led ADAS camera systems in 2014 with phenomenal growth, outperforming expectations.

LucidShape 2.0 empowers automotive lighting engineers to develop, verify and deliver high-quality designs while reducing product development time.

Visualize Module
LucidShape’s new Visualize Module delivers high-speed photorealistic images of an automotive lighting system’s lit appearance, which demonstrate luminance effects when light sources in a model are illuminated. Because the Visualize Module depicts all interactions between system geometry and light sources, it provides designers with a physically correct diagnostic tool for evaluating how a lighting system will be perceived by the human eye. This is particularly important for evaluating automotive components such as turn signals and brake lights. The Visualize Module is a fast, reliable engineering tool that enables designers to perform design checks and make improvements early and often in the product development process.

The Visualize Module delivers these key capabilities:

  • Supports environment sources for the integration of 360-degree, high-dynamic range (HDR) photographic environments into photorealistic visualizations. Includes all physical and optical properties for an immersive, accurate rendering of a lighting scene.
  • Combines LucidShape’s luminance camera and backward ray tracing to perform rapid, high-accuracy luminance calculations and generate photorealistic images at multiple angles and viewing directions.
  • Harnesses LucidShape’s GPUtrace solution, which uses graphics processing unit (GPU) computing to accelerate illumination simulations by orders of magnitude compared to multithreading capabilities. The speed of the Visualize Module’s simulations gives designers the flexibility to rapidly evaluate their models at any point in the design process.

The Ray Data Viewer now provided with LucidShape creates illuminance images based on ray data sources. This allows designers to quickly preview the lit appearance and structure of vendor light sources before incorporating them into their models. Sources can be viewed from various angles using a camera positioning capability.

Light Pipe Tool
The new Light Pipe Tool simplifies and speeds the creation of complete light pipe designs by allowing prism bands, which model sheets of prismatic microstructures, to be created in conjunction with light pipe surfaces in LucidShape. With this tool, the light pipe surface is automatically fit to the prism band and merged into a single new shape, producing a seamless, optically accurate light guide.

Measured Bidirectional Scatter Distribution Function (BSDF) Surface Material Library
LucidShape’s material library, which provides a wide array of surface material and bulk volume media, has been expanded to include measured BSDF models from Synopsys’ LightTools® illumination design software. The new measured BSDF data delivers unsurpassed accuracy for modeling surface scattering for materials commonly used in automotive lighting and can be expanded and customized by designers according to their unique requirements.

Jaguar Land Rover Selects Sirius XM Connected Vehicle Services to Provide Call Center Support for Safety and Security Services for Its InControl™ Infotainment System

Jaguar and Land Rover owners to receive a 4-Year Subscription to safety and security services supported by SiriusXM on 2016 model year vehicles

Jaguar Land Rover North America and SiriusXM today announced Jaguar Land Rover has selected Sirius XM Connected Vehicle Services Inc., a subsidiary of SiriusXM, to provide call center support for safety and security services to vehicle occupants using its Jaguar InControl® and Land Rover InControl® infotainment systems.

The Jaguar and Land Rover InControl suite of technologies provides vehicle owners with an array of advanced driver assistance systems including emergency response contact as part of the available InControl Remote & Protect™ system. SiriusXM will provide Jaguar and Land Rover vehicle owners with support for personal safety and security services, including:

  • Automatic Crash Notification (ACN): Automatically signals a SiriusXM Response Specialist to assist the vehicle’s occupant with notifying emergency responders in the event of an accident, provide the vehicle’s location, and communicate with the vehicle’s occupant until help arrives.
  • SOS/E-Call: Gives the vehicle’s occupant the ability to contact a SiriusXM Response Specialist via an in-vehicle S.O.S. button during an emergency.

Jaguar Land Rover is expected to introduce InControl™ to the U.S. market beginning with the delivery of select 2016 model year vehicles. Owners will receive a 4-year subscription to SiriusXM supported safety and security services when purchasing any 2016 model year vehicle equipped with InControl Remote & Protect™.
