Taoglas Brings Antenna Innovation to the Vehicle-to-Vehicle Market with Unique DSRC Antenna

Continuing its history of innovation, antenna leader Taoglas today introduced the DCP.5900, a unique ceramic patch antenna designed for emerging V2V and V2X applications. Ahead of the market, the DCP.5900 supports the latest communications technology for vehicles – DSRC (dedicated short-range communications). This system enables two-way short- to medium-range wireless communications and is critical for active safety applications. The antenna operates from 5850MHz to 5925MHz, fully covering the spectrum allocated for DSRC by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI.) Using these frequencies, DSRC will enable cars to communicate with each other and alert drivers to roadside hazards ahead.

Critical for makers of vehicle safety devices or any V2V or V2X application, this antenna supports high speed and low latency with short-range wireless communication. “For DSRC devices, antenna performance is essential – these devices need to work at all times, even in the toughest RF environments. With safety applications there’s no room for error,” said Dermot O’Shea, Taoglas’ Joint CEO. “The DCP.5900 has an efficiency of 75% and works in rugged environments, even providing continuing connectivity in harsh weather conditions such as subzero or very high temperatures.”

The DCP.5900 ceramic patch antenna is mounted via pin and double-sided adhesive. Even though the miniature antenna is only 12x12mm it exhibits a peak gain of 5.89dBi and over 75% efficiency. The antenna is circularly polarized which means device manufacturers do not have to worry about connecting with other devices such as cars or traffic light systems. The DCP.5900 allows OEMs to transmit and receive more effectively with antennas of varying polarization and characteristics, important in a mobile environment where it’s not known how the other antennas will be installed.

“At Taoglas, we are always looking at the market and talking to customers and partners in order to help us optimize our product road map,” O’Shea explained. “For V2V, OEMs that want to optimize device performance, the circularly polarized DCP.5900 antenna is perfect as it is extremely robust mechanically and the material technology has been used for years in the automotive business for GNSS and cellular antennas.”
