But for autonomous vehicles to navigate safely, GPS systems must be reliable, accurate and affordable. Once these systems are incorporated into the autonomous sensor suite within vehicles, the complexities of deploying and maintaining a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) network come into play. Swift Navigation is redefining GNSS with low-cost, highly accurate, real-time kinematics (RTK) receivers. RTK technology measures precise “carrier” phase satellite signals and uses a reference receiver—or base station—to broadcast corrections that cancel out ionospheric delays, delivering 100 times better accuracy than the GPS in a cell phone.
