IBM Honors Global Customers for Outstanding Achievement in Information Management

LAS VEGAS - 29 Oct 2009: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced the winners of its annual IBM Information On Demand Client Innovation Awards, recognizing IBM customers that have taken advantage of trusted information and analytics to deliver smarter business decisions.

Chosen from an extensive list of nominations worldwide, winners were selected in multiple categories by a panel of industry thought leaders and IBM executives. Award recipients were honored during a special client luncheon at the IBM Global Information On Demand Conference in Las Vegas on Wednesday, October 28, 2009.

“To survive in a world in which margins for error have never been smaller, businesses must find a way to turn their information into a strategic driver for innovation and competitive differentiation,” said Ambuj Goyal, general manager, Business Analytics and Process Optimization, IBM Software Group. “IBM applauds all award recipients who have clearly demonstrated how to best capitalize on technology to deliver exceptional solutions that solve real business problems.”

The City of New York was granted the Top IOD Solution, for its Health and Human Services-Connect initiative. HHS-Connect will link more than a dozen New York City agencies so that caseworkers are able to securely share client information, thus dedicating more face-to-face time with their clients instead of chasing or managing paperwork. HHS-Connect promises to fundamentally change how the City provides health and human services by ensuring holistic and integrated services that wrap around a family, delivering a more complete understanding of the clients’ needs that will ultimately lead to better client care.

Alameda County (California) Social Services Agency and Hrafn were honored in the Outstanding Smarter Planet Solutions category. Alameda Social Services Agency is using IBM analytics to provide caseworkers a consolidated picture of all the benefits a client is receiving across six different social services programs. Fraud detection and validation work that previously took four to six months is now happening in a matter of minutes, helping the County direct funding and resources to where they are needed the most. In total, this initiative has saved over $11 million in taxpayer dollars.

Working with IBM, Hrafn designed and built a smart sensor infrastructure for the Nordics’ first track-and-trace service, which – by enabling manufacturers and grocery retailers to view the complete history of a food product – has helped significantly speed response-times to potential food contamination recalls. The system also helps manufacturers and supermarkets improve the responsiveness of the supply chain and quickly adapt to changing consumer buying patterns.

In the category of Outstanding Information Agenda Solution, IBMacknowledged Rooms To Go, the largest independent furniture company in the United States. Rooms To Go collaborated with IBM in developing an Information Agenda strategy that would help maximize sales and profitability. Tapping IBM business analytics technology, Rooms To Go management can now access comprehensive reports that more readily and easily identify shopper buying patterns, enabling staff to optimize floor planning. It also reduced advertising costs by helping marketing staff better target promotions to most likely buyers.

IBM also presented a series of Best IODAwards, recognizingcustomers that have exhibited extreme innovation in using IBM Information Management technology to gain significant business or organizational benefits. Winners included:

  • Best Solution for Business Intelligence – Martin’s Point, a not-for-profit regional health care provider based in northern New England. In addition to improving information access and expediting reporting, Martin’s Point use of IBM Cognos BI has helped support improved care. Today, managers can produce clinical profiles of patients and alert member physicians about potential gaps in care.
  • Best Solution for Performance ManagementQualcomm Incorporated., the world’s leading provider of wireless chipset technology. By implementing IBM Cognos performance management solutions, the company now benefits from fully integrated planning and forecasting that enables management to more efficiently plan and oversee cross-departmental strategies.

IBM Unveils New Offerings to Help Clients Better Manage Content With Analytics

Enables Clients to Analyze Unstructured and Structured Information, Reduce Costs and Make Smarter Business Decisions

LAS VEGAS - 27 Oct 2009: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced new business analytics offerings designed to help clients better manage and control their unstructured and structured data in a unified manner, while providing valuable insight into their content across the enterprise.

The volume of unstructured data found on Web sites and social networking sites, in digital files, WebSphere Portal, Microsoft SharePoint, databases and customer comments, is increasing exponentially. Typically, organizations manage this unstructured information separately from their structured data found in applications and databases. By compiling and analyzing both structured and unstructured information, organizations can garner business insights from unlimited volumes of text from e-mails, documents, blogs, wikis and websites and change the way they do business.

IBM’s new offerings provide clients with the ability to access, assess and analyze unstructured information that can be found inside and outside their organization. The analytic offerings allow business users to find and gain insight from virtually any type of content – in any format – by extracting, sorting, filtering and categorizing key information and making the content relevant so organizations can more effectively make market-driven business decisions.

For example, it is critical for healthcare insurers to have insight into patient records to provide more cost-effective coverage and better quality care. Using content analytics, payers can analyze treatment records of thousands of patients, enabling them to identify the providers that provide the best approach to patient care and define the most cost-effective protocols to provide better overall patient care.

“Our clients realize that in today’s competitive landscape, they need to have better insight into all their information so they can act quickly and make the right decisions,” said Ambuj Goyal, general manager, Business Analytics and Process Optimization, IBM Software Group. “With the strength and breadth of our business analytics technology and expertise, IBM is helping clients combine, manage and useunstructured and structured data to drive innovation.”

The offerings IBM is introducing today deliver new business visibility and understanding from the content and context of unstructured information, helping clients turn unstructured content, such as e-mails, documents, and web pages, into relevant business information. The offerings include:

  • IBM Cognos Content Analytics: This new offering allows organizations to discover, refine and deliver new insights by analyzing unstructured enterprise content alongside structured data. Through focused navigation, users can identify trends and patterns and proactively detect anomalies for improved decision making.
  • IBM plans toexpand the IBM Cognos Content Analytics family to include new solutions targeted at specific industries and business requirements. One solution currently being previewed centers around insight into consumer sentiment. This solution will be designed to help packaged goods companies gain a better understanding of what the market is saying about their brands on the “cloud” in blogs, wikis and media Web sites.
  • IBM InfoSphere Content Assessment: Using content analytics, this new offering helps organizations rapidly assess unmanaged content to identify high-risk and valued content such as corporate records that need to be secured, retained and managed throughout its lifespan. The software simultaneously detects unnecessary content eligible for decommissioning, creating the opportunity to dramatically reduce production system burdens and associated storage requirements.

Bridging Content into Master Data Management

One of the most vexing problems in master data management (MDM) is completing master data records with important unstructured information such as scanned documents and e-mail correspondence. To help clients address this challenge, IBM MDM software now enables clients to incorporate unstructured information into their single view of customer or product solutions. Organizations can now deliver a more complete version of trusted information to improve customer service and make better business decisions.

The new InfoSphere Master Content for InfoSphere Master Data Management Server, for example, can help a financial services provider incorporate trusted content such as birth certificates, drivers’ licenses, and credit reports into master customer records. Too often, different departments operate individually, requesting and collecting the same information from their customers. The financial services provider for a new business transaction such as a major funds withdrawal, will now have a more comprehensive, single view of a customer. Trusted content, linked to the master record improves information quality and provides rapid access to the right information.

Similarly, a consumer electronics retailer using the new version of InfoSphere MDM Server for Product Information Management can incorporate photos and manuals for each individual product into their MDM system so that information can be found alongside other product data. Greater consistency of information and the ease of accessing a single version of all product information can help improve business results by delivering a better customer experience while improving operational efficiency.

IBM Announces Information Archive To Help Businesses Manage Explosive Data Growth

Solution Supports IBM’s New Smart Archive Strategy

BOSTON, Mass. - 06 Oct 2009: At its Information Infrastructure Analyst Summit today, IBM (NYSE: IBM) unveiled plans for a new Smart Business System called IBM Information Archive, a universal archiving repository for all types of content that addresses the complete information retention needs of midsize and enterprise clients faced with managing an increasing volume of information.

With key contributions from IBM Research, System Storage and Tivoli, IBM Information Archive leverages IBM’s expertise in designing systems to address clients’ needs by combining fast accessible disk with low-cost tape within a single archive pool to enable businesses to deploy an archive strategy that minimizes total cost of ownership over the life of the archived information.  It also incorporates deduplication and compression techniques to optimize storage capacity and improve productivity.

Its architecture brings together IBM’s General Parallel File System technology, Tivoli Storage Manager and patent-pending Enhanced Tamper Protection to offer a high performance, high scalability, and secure platform that can be accessed in a private Cloud computing environment, even if the data is stored on tape media.

The need for archiving information is on the rise, driven by data growth, regulatory compliance, legal discovery and data protection. With ever-increasing requirements surrounding the long-term retention of information, organizations are looking for advanced archiving technologies to manage information throughout its lifecycle.

The IBM Information Archive is designed for archiving a broad range of electronic based records, including e-mail, digital images, databases, applications, instant messages, account records, contracts or insurance claim documents, and other types of storage records. Information Archive will also be supported by a number of IBM software applications for email, content, data and report archiving including IBM Optim Data Growth Solution, IBM Content Collector and other Enterprise Content Management offerings.

IBM pureScale Technology Redefines Transaction Processing Economics

New DB2 Feature Sets the Bar for System Performance on More than 100 IBM Power Systems

ARMONK, N.Y., Oct. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — IBM ( IBM) today announced a new software technology called DB2 pureScale, running on IBM Power Systems, that helps clients increase their database transaction capacity while reducing the risk and cost of growing their IT systems.

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20090416/IBMLOGO)

Jointly developed by the IBM Toronto Software Lab and Power Systems Lab in Austin, TX, the new DB2 feature delivers the continuous availability and virtually unlimited computing power required to meet growing business demands. The design of pureScale, based on the architecture and 15 years of proven experience of DB2 on System z, reflects the strengths of IBM software technology optimized for Power Systems.

As the amount of data continues to grow, industry segments are poised to take advantage of IBM’s economical and efficient approach to scaling capacity — without forcing customers to overspend on excess hardware and software. With pureScale, companies can now buy only what they need to handle increasing amounts of data by simply adding servers to their DB2 pureScale systems. DB2 also offers the flexibility of adding and removing capacity with the option of paying for only the days clients need the additional software to handle peak workloads.

Industries Generating New Levels of Intelligence Require More Capacity

An explosion of data in almost every industry is making it more challenging than ever for customers to handle large volume of transactions. In the energy industry, for example, utility companies are equipping homes and businesses with smart meters to read how much power is being used, while food retailers are tagging food items with radio-frequency ID chips to more efficiently manage inventory control. In addition, electronic medical records for healthcare are requiring entirely new levels of transaction processing, with federal laws specifying ever-more-stringent security; while telecommunications firms are providing composite and consolidated content to their customers’ mobile devices.

In a system performance test with more than 100 Power servers, DB2 pureScale achieved a total system productivity of more than 80%. In comparison, competitive offerings have only demonstrated 60% system productivity with less than half the number of servers. In fact, with 64 servers, DB2 pureScale generated a system productivity of more than 90%. These scaling results set the bar for economical database system growth.

By incorporating new PowerHA pureScale technology, DB2 pureScale dramatically reduces the amount of communications required within the system – resulting in significantly less computing power wasted on overhead.

“Clients are constantly fighting a battle of IT economics and increasingly choosing DB2 and Power to help reduce the costs of managing their growing business data,” said Arvind Krishna, general manager, IBM Information Management. “DB2 pureScale on Power Systems helps clients grow their IT infrastructure more reliably and economically than ever before to meet today’s business needs. This addition to the IBM portfolio complements DB2 on System z, the only platform that provides greater scalability and availability and which remains the undisputed leader in database systems.”

“Businesses today place their trust in an underlying IT infrastructure to reliably run their applications,” said Ross Mauri, general manager, IBM Power Systems. “DB2 on Power Systems delivers proven technology that provides scalable, predictable and consistent performance for our clients. The PowerHA pureScale technology enhances this capability to deliver continuous availability and exceptional horizontal scalability to DB2 pureScale.”

Capacity growth achieved with DB2 pureScale does not require changes to applications or database tuning. This application transparency reduces risk and cost as clients grow computing power without service interruption. It also complements the capability delivered in DB2 9.7, which enables applications originally written for other database software, such as Oracle Database, to enjoy the benefits of DB2 with little or no changes.

DB2 pureScale will initially be available on Power 550 Express and Power 595 systems in December.

Fully Automated Testing of Windows Forms User Interfaces

Fig.1: Custom Proxies Enable Meaningful Test Scripts to Be Recorded

Users judge your software by its user interface, as their primary touch point it must be intuitive and error free, so ensuring a positive user experience requires extensive testing. Initially, many organizations rely upon manual spot checks of the performance and usability of their user interfaces, but find that such checks are unreliable. Ad hoc checks are often subjective, cover a small functional area and are hard to repeat with consistency. Even when formal test case specifications are drafted and followed precisely, manual testing efforts grow timeconsuming and expensive.

Enterprises like yours have increasingly recognized the crucial importance of their user experience and having a systematic testing program in place, which was one factor leading Infragistics to collaborate with IBM to offer TestAdvantage for Windows Forms (for IBM Rational Functional Tester).

How Automated Testing Works

IBM Rational Functional Tester is a leading tool for Quality Assurance teams validating proper application behavior, including in the user interface. One of its main features is the ability to replay test scripts that a test engineer will write to carry out a sequence of steps. These test scripts can include sophisticated logic and control flow. In addition to replaying scripts, you can also record an interactive session in which a user’s actions are transcribed into script statements. Very often, a test engineer will record a session using the application and they can then customize the logic of the test script.

Like many testing environments, Rational Functional Tester has objects (“proxies”) in its scripting language representing generic UI controls, but its knowledge of them is limited. When a user mouse clicks a certain spot in a control, the mouse coordinates can be retained and transcribed into the test script but often the meaning is lost. Recorded test scripts of the user interface can also be highly brittle, because these coordinates may depend on a particular layout and positioning of controls on the screen at the time the script was recorded.

The Difference Knowledge Makes

Now suppose you had custom proxies with privileged knowledge about the UI control they represent? The mouse click isn’t just on a spot anymore, but the column header of a table triggering its data to be sorted. There is no problem if the form is moved, because the mouse click remains targeted on the table’s column header rather than the old (X,Y) coordinates. When the test engineer examines a lengthy test script after recording, the action becomes much more meaningful.

TestAdvantage supplies custom proxies for all of the UI controls in Infragistics’ NetAdvantage for Windows Forms toolset. These proxies extend upon the proven testing foundation of IBM Rational Functional Tester, and enable Quality Assurance teams to rapidly and effectively test their user interfaces that are powered by NetAdvantage for Windows Forms. Each proxy has special knowledge about its control’s features and underlying object model, enabling test engineers to rapidly record and replay much more robust and effective test scripts than previously possible.

Made for Rational Functional Tester

TestAdvantage integrates seamlessly into Rational Functional Tester, in fact it has earned IBM’s Ready for Rational Software designation which validates its compatibility. Test engineers versed in Rational Function Tester can utilize some of its dynamic features such as:

  • Data-driven testing
  • Verification points
  • Java or VB scripting

Fig.2: Verification Points Are as Finely Grained as the Control APIs

Data-driven testing enables the test engineer to supply large amounts of data that can then be used to drive testing. It is ideal when testing complex data entry scenarios in the user interface, such as entering insurance records or purchase orders into a multi-field form or grid control. It can also be used to achieve broad coverage of an application’s functionality, including diverse boundary cases.

You can also see in the screen shot how the verification points exposed by the TestAdvantage custom proxies span the object model of NetAdvantage for Windows Forms controls, covering properties deep within its grid and ribbon controls. Test cases can be thoroughly written and made as finegrained as the application had been coded in the first place, greatly empowering an organization’s Quality Assurance team.

Infragistics developed these custom proxies to work specifically with Rational Functional Tester, so they fulfill the contract expected of a proxy object and are completely encapsulated. Test engineers can access them using test scripts developed in either Rational Functional Tester’s VB or Java-like scripting environments, whichever scripting language they prefer. The exposed capabilities are the same.

Of course, development teams can spend precious development cycles writing their own custom proxies and wrappers that extend Rational Functional Tester, but it would be costly in both time and resources before the full benefit can be seen. It would also probably yield less than perfect results, due to the complexity of integrating the complete functionality of an automated testing tool with a full-featured control toolset like NetAdvantage for Windows Forms. TestAdvantage enables organizations to immediately benefit from systematic, automated UI testing without having to make a large up-front investments in writing their own custom tools.

Regression Testing Made Feasible

Software changes always risk introducing new defects, so it is a best practice to regularly repeat tests with the goal of ensuring a change in one part of the application hasn’t inadvertantly caused an error to occur in a part of the application already tested.Manual test practices made running regression tests as costly as running tests the first time around, so often regression testing was a luxury that couldn’t be afforded.

Manual test practices made running regression tests as costly as running tests the first time around, so often regression testing was a luxury that couldn’t be afforded.

Releases Made With Confidence

TestAdvantage significantly improves the performance of Quality Assurance teams with its seamless integration, special knowledge of NetAdvantage for Windows Forms controls, and effective test scripts. It enables test engineers to run more tests in less time for greater test coverage and productivity, maximizing the time they spend testing versus time spent troubleshooting scripts.

Organizations that systematically automate their user interface testing know with confidence that the user experience of the software they release is high-quality.

APG Integrates Enterprise Architecture with Solution Delivery

APG Delivers Actionable Enterprise Architecture

Hudson, WI, February 28, 2009 – Armstrong Process Group (APG) announced today its release of the APG TOGAF Process Library Plus Rational Unified Process (ATPL+RUP). With their new product, APG has integrated the industry’s premiere, open enterprise architecture development method and framework – The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF™), with the industry’s leading solution delivery method – the IBM Rational Unified Process® (RUP®).

“In today’s competitive economic climate, organizations more than ever need to strategically manage their IT assets to lower development and operating costs, while supporting the business’ pursuit of innovation, market differentiation, and regulatory compliance,” said Chris Armstrong, President of APG. “ATPL+RUP provides organizations an integrated framework of proven best practices and industry standards that delivers these capabilities.”

Research shows that top-performing organizations share a number of common success factors, including: 1) assigning accountability for organizational change to key solution delivery projects, 2) clarifying how architecturally-significant projects link to business strategy, and 3) learning from each project to further develop internal capabilities to effectively manage architecture assets.

ATPL+RUP shows how enterprise architecture influences activities in many different aspects of solution delivery. ATPL+RUP identifies which TOGAF architecture deliverables are relevant to solution delivery and associates them with specific tasks within RUP. This includes tasks in the RUP disciplines of project management, requirements, architecture, design, and testing.

“ATPL+RUP identifies two key roles who are the liaisons between enterprise architecture and solution delivery,” said Armstrong. “The Solution Architect helps solution delivery projects understand their enterprise architecture context and requirements, and the disposition of relevant architecture assets – reuse, buy, or build. The Architecture Review Lead helps projects rationalize critical design decisions and demonstrate their compliance with organization standards.”

ATPL+RUP is an IBM Ready for Rational software validated product and integrates with the IBM Rational Software Delivery Platform. In particular, ATPL+RUP is designed to be used with IBM Rational Method Composer (RMC), an Eclipse-based tool for defining and manage business and IT development methods.

Organizations interested in learning more about ATPL+RUP can contact APG at sales@aprocessgroup.com or visit the APG website at www.aprocessgroup.com/products/product_02_010402.asp.

Team Announces Clearconn Version 2.5

Accelerate information gathering with ClearConn

Westminster, CO – January 31, 2009

ReleaseTEAM, Inc., the Software Configuration Management specialists, has announced the release of the latest version of ClearConn. ClearConn 2.5 is a custom integration between IBM Rational’s ClearCase and ClearQuest. ClearConn is an add-on application that allows for streamlined sharing of information between ClearCase and ClearQuest. ClearConn is an easy to install and configure utility that will provide speed and robustness that is superior to out of the box integration tools.

ClearConn is a two tier, client-server approach that both gathers relevant information and greatly reduces elapsed time at checkout, uncheckout and checkin operations. The client side of ClearConn gathers the ClearCase information it needs to store in ClearQuest and saves it as an attribute in ClearCase. The server side searches all of the designated ClearCase VOBs  for the attribute and records the information in ClearQuest. ClearConn easily manages the integration of information from ClearCase VOBs to any ClearQuest database.

ClearConn has been developed using best practices learned from implementing custom integration solutions for IBM Rational’s ClearCase and ClearQuest. Software development groups have many different requirements for integrations between source code control tools and change and defect tracking tools. ClearConn takes into account this wide variety of requirements, and is very configurable. ClearConn has been developed for high performance, ClearConn will not slow down ClearCase.

ReleaseTEAM is a software Configuration Management consulting firm located in Westminster Colorado since 1999. The TEAM in ReleaseTEAM stands for the network of release and build engineers, tool-smiths and CM tool administrators with decades of combined experience who provide hands-on expertise and best practice software development solutions. The road to success for software development projects relies on sound Configuration Management processes and the seamless integration of these processes and tools. ReleaseTEAM specializes in today’s high standards and IBM Rational Software’s tool set.

ClearConn is ReleaseTEAM’s custom integration between Rational Software’s Rational ClearCase(R) and Rational ClearQuest(R) products.

ClearConn is ReleaseTEAM’s custom integration between Rational Software’s Rational ClearCase(R) and Rational ClearQuest(R) products. ClearConn allows for streamlined sharing of information between ClearCase and ClearQuest. ClearConn is an easy to install and configure utility that will provide speed and robustness that is superior to other ClearCase/ClearQuest integration tools. ClearConn provides more ClearCase data in ClearQuest than other non-UCM integrations. ClearConn provides an optional transport method that does not require a direct connection between the ClearCase servers and the ClearQuest server.

    • Fast! ClearConn greatly reduces elapsed time at checkout, uncheckout, and checkin operations

    • ClearConn allows tracking of detailed information about checkins and (optionally) checkouts and uncheckouts.

    • Bi-directional Integration Transaction information is recorded in ClearQuest as stateless record information, and in ClearCase as attributes

    • Highly Customizable

    • 2 Tier Architecture

Client Side – Saves important ClearQuest data as a ClearCase attribute Server Side- Searches ClearCase VOB’s for attributes and records the data in ClearQuest while setting links to ClearQuest into ClearCase

    • Optional CGI data transport removes need for a direct connection between ClearCase and ClearQuest servers

    • Intuitive Interface

    • Built in Help Files

ClearConn has been created using best practices learned from implementing custom solutions for many customers. ClearConn facilitates and automates information sharing between ClearCase VOBs and ClearQuest databases. ClearConn provides change set management allowing for accurate project tracking and reporting. By using ClearConn, developers are able to accelerate change information gathering and increase product satisfaction while utilizing the full power of ClearCase and ClearQuest.

ClearConn provides detailed, human-readable information in ClearQuest about the checkins, checkouts and uncheckouts that it tracks.

Software development groups have many different requirements for integrations between their source code control tool and their change and defect-tracking tools. ClearConn takes into account this wide variety of requirements, and is very configurable.

ClearConn has also been developed for high performance: ClearConn will not slow down Rational ClearCase performance.

ClearConn uses a two tier, client-server approach that both gathers relevant information and greatly reduces elapsed time at checkout, uncheckout, and checkin operations. The client side of this solution gathers the Rational ClearCase information it needs to store in Rational ClearQuest and saves it as an attribute in Rational ClearCase. The server side searches all of the designated Rational ClearCase VOBs for the attribute and records the information in Rational ClearQuest. ClearConn can be set to gather all Rational ClearCase checkin and checkout information and record it into Rational ClearQuest. It can be configured to work only on certain branches, or just on checkin operations. The relationships between Rational ClearQuest databases and Rational ClearCase VOBs are one to many. With ClearConn you can manage the integration between all your Rational ClearCase VOBs to all your Rational ClearQuest databases.

When using the optional CGI data transport, ClearConn eliminates the need for a direct local network connection between the ClearCase and ClearQuest servers. ClearConn CGI allows direct control of the ports that need to be open in a firewall.

Implementation Requirements/Overview

    • ClearConn requires one Windows NT/2000/XP or Unix machine

    • ClearConn is compatible with any current version of ClearCase (base, MultiSite or UCM) and ClearQuest

    • During installation ClearConn requires a ClearQuest user account with rights to apply packages and update schemas

    • ClearConn requires a ClearCase user account with rights to add and remove attribute types

    • ClearCONN CGI requires an Apache webserver configured to support CGI.

Report: IBM outpaces competitors in Application Development software market for seventh straight year

ARMONK, NY – 13 Jun 2008: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced that analyst firm Gartner, Inc.* and market research firm Evans Data Corp. have ranked IBM as the leader in the application development software market. These rankings come just as IBM is projecting more than 12,000 people will attend its 2008 IBM Rational Software Development Conferences in 13 countries around the globe.

Gartner named IBM the worldwide market share leader in application development based on total software revenue in 2007 and Evans Data Corp. survey respondents who were users of IBM Rational Application Developer ranked it the number one Integrated Developer Environment (IDE) for user satisfaction. This is the seventh consecutive year that Gartner has ranked IBM the leader and second consecutive year that IBM Rational Application Developer was selected as the Developer’s Choice top IDE by the 1,200 developers worldwide participating in the survey.

According to the independent Gartner report, IBM is the leading market share vendor in total software revenue, with 37.8 percent market share — greater market share than its three closest competitors combined. The worldwide application development software market grew more than 10% percent in 2007 to nearly $6.9 billion, according to Gartner.

IBM was also noted for its overall leadership based on total software revenue for 2007 across application development market sub-categories, including SCCM Distributed, Object Oriented Analysis & Design and Java Platform AD Tool. Telelogic, recently acquired by IBM, had a 2007 marketshare of 40.6 percent in the Requirements Elicitation and Management category based on total software revenue.

"With the rise of globally distributed software development teams, customers are looking for experienced vendors to help them collaborate in an open and transparent manner," said Dr. Daniel Sabbah, general manager, IBM Rational Software. "We believe the strong response from the Evans Data and Gartner reports coincides with the feedback we’ve received from customers about IBM’s strategy around effective software delivery."

IBM Kicks off the World’s Most Attended Developer Conference Series

This marketshare news coincides with IBM’s announcement that over 12,000 participants are expected to attend the 15 IBM Rational Software Development Conferences planned around the globe. Following the event held last week in Orlando, FL, IBM will take the show on the road to 17 cities including Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt; San Paulo, Brazil; Bangalore, India; Shanghai, China; Rome and Milan, Italy.

For conference attendees using an iPhone, IBM is releasing a conference scheduler written in Enterprise Generation Language (EGL) to enable iPhone users to dynamically experience the IBM Rational Software Development Conference through an interface that they feel comfortable with. Using Web 2.0 and social engineering concepts, users can provide feedback on and chat about sessions, navigate the conference searching for tracks and events, and use inventive technology that suggests which talks the user should attend next based on preferences.

At the annual IBM Rational Software Development Conference in Orlando, Florida, more than 3,500 attendees learned about new software and programs that help customers transform how they are delivery software on a global scale. The announcement of new products, services and business partner initiatives are designed to transform how IBM Rational software can help clients drive greater value and performance from their globally distributed software investments.

Clients unable to attend the conference locally can view the keynote presentations on IBM TV.

IBM helps developers remain competitive in today’s fast-paced development environment. Innovative programs such as IBM developerWorks, the premier technical resource for software developers, and IBM alphaWorks, IBM’s emerging technologies outlet, provide an online community for the developers of today and tomorrow. Developers who are independent software vendors can take advantage of sales and marketing tools, skill-building courses and technical support by joining the worldwide IBM PartnerWorld program. IBM’s Academic Initiative and IBM Rational Software Development Conference are examples of the ongoing learning and community-building programs needed by students, educators and developers worldwide.

Made in IBM Labs: IBM Debuts “Grammar Checker” Approach to Catching Software Bugs

TTAWA – 29 Jul 2008: Bug-ridden, poor quality software costs businesses billions of dollars annually [1] and the cost of identifying and repairing a software defect in a product that is already being used by consumers can cost upwards of $16,000 [2] for each defect. Recognizing these challenges, IBM (NYSE: IBM) is introducing new software that intelligently catches bugs and other defects while software code is being written — rather than after a product that is powered by software has already been shipped to customers.

Currently, most software developers test applications for defects right before the application goes into production — when 90 percent of the software code is already written. The new IBM software — IBM Rational Software Analyzer — scans software code for quality and defects before the application is built, thereby reducing the amount of defects hitting the marketplace by 15 to 20 percent.

“The world is increasingly dependent on software, and in turn business processes and new products represent the majority of new requirements levied on development teams,” said Daniel Sabbah, general manager, IBM Rational Software. “Software project failures impact the bottom line and as levels of complexity in software continue to rise, software developers need to create more stable software in less time. This is the business reality of software and systems delivery.”

Demand for on time and under budget IT projects is not a new phenomenon, nor is the challenge of creating high caliber software code. IBM Rational Software Analyzer will help companies produce higher quality software that contains fewer bugs. The new software will also reduce the time development teams spend on time consuming and error-prone manual testing processes, allowing them to devote more time to building software programs. For example, the new software has functions similar to a grammar checker commonly found in word processing programs that can help developers find code and style errors rather than grammar mistakes. The new IBM software also provides suggestions on how to fix bugs.

Built as a plug-in for the latest version of Eclipse, Eclipse version 3.3, IBM Rational Software Analyzer finds software errors, flags them and makes suggestions, reducing time spent reviewing software code prior to a software build. Similar to how an author follows rules and proofreads a story to ensure it is understandable and cohesive, IBM Rational Software Analyzer can automatically scan each line of code up to 700 times, “grammar checking” the code before it goes into production. Just as in book publishing, where there is a great need to catch mistakes before a book appears in bookstores, the cost of identifying and fixing errors in software code rises exponentially the further along a programmer is in the development process.

To be competitive in today’s fast-paced business environment requires increased visibility and automation of governance and compliance measures. Software developers can use the new IBM software to provide insight to their management team through detailed reporting on software code status and to offer direction into governance and compliance of corporate coding guidelines and requirements. IBM partners and customers can build an adaptor to use the code scanning technology in IBM Rational Software Analyzer to improve the code quality and development of their custom-built offerings.

IBM Rational Software Analyzer is currently available. Pricing for the Developer Edition is US$3,500 per user while pricing for the Enterprise Edition is US$50,000 per server with unlimited users.

Electric Cloud, Inc.

ElectricAccelerator (Featuring ElectricInsight)

Compatible OS: Microsoft Windows, Sun Solaris, Red Hat Linux

Compatible IBM Software:IBM Rational ClearCase

Software builds are the last opportunity for real, measurable improvement for most development organizations, and yet are one of the least addressed parts of the lifecycle. Development process improvements and automated tools can only do so much to improve productivity if builds are still limiting your throughput.

The ElectricAccelerator solution breaks the “build bottleneck” by accurately executing parallel builds across scalable clusters of inexpensive, standard hardware that reduce build times by as much as 20x. The centerpiece of this solution, Electric Make®, is a plug-compatible version of the software build tool Make. It plugs seamlessly into existing Make-based build infrastructures, without modifying existing build scripts and tools to distribute the work of the build to a cluster of servers. Performance and throughput can be further increased by adding servers to the cluster, providing a reliable, scalable build solution.

The latest addition to this solution is ElectricInsight™, a software build visualization tool that depicts how the build is structured and run, empowering build managers to pinpoint performance problems or conflicts in a parallel build. An add-on to the ElectricAccelerator solution, ElectricInsight mines the information produced by Electric Make to provide an easy-to-understand, graphical representation of the build structure for performance analysis.

FEATURES & BENEFITS

  • ElectricAccelerator’s unmatched dependency management system allows vastly greater scalability than ever before, delivering improvements of up to 20x over a sequential build, with no changes to existing build scripts or tools.
  • Dependencies are automated for both full and incremental builds, so ElectricAccelerator eliminates the need for frequent, full builds for small changes. You can drive product quality earlier in the project lifecycle by having developers do builds prior to code check-in.
  • ElectricInsight provides detailed information on each job on each node of the build cluster, helping users identify which jobs are being performed, when, and with what files, for at-a-glance diagnostics. Instead of manually pouring over tens of thousands of lines of information in a build output file, error detection and performance tuning that once took hours or days can now be done in seconds.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  • Runs on Sun Solaris, Red Hat Linux, Microsoft Windows
  • Compatible with Make and Make variants, including IBM Rational ClearMake
