Webtide Sends Proposal for Jetty to Become Eclipse Project
Webtide’s leading Java web and application server, Jetty, looks to become a project at The Eclipse Foundation
MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Webtide, the main developer of leading open source Java web and application server, Jetty, has announced that Jetty has submitted a proposal to become an Eclipse Foundation project.
Eclipse is an independent not-for-profit corporation that encompasses a large community of over 4 million developers, from large and small organizations to individuals. Eclipse’s goal is to build an open development platform that encompasses software’s entire lifecycle. Over 190 member companies contribute to more than 100 different Eclipse Foundation open source projects.
While considering ways in which the Jetty project could continue to grow and improve, the project leaders were given the suggestion of a move to the Eclipse Foundation. After informal discussion with the Eclipse Foundation and the Jetty community, a significant level of synergy was noted between the technical and governance practices, plus many benefits were identified for both the project and Foundation.
Jetty has been an important part of several major Eclipse projects. Since Eclipse IDE version 3.3, Jetty has served its help system. Jetty is also the web and application server for Equinox, its OSGi-based plug-in platform for application development.
Under the proposal, Jetty would be dual licensed. At present, Jetty is licensed under the Apache License 2.0. When accepted by Eclipse, it will also be licensed under the Eclipse Public License. The addition of the new license will not impact existing users.
Becoming an Eclipse project is expected to benefit both Jetty and Eclipse. For Jetty, becoming a part of Eclipse’s large established organization will bring with it more formalized processes and the Q&A procedures that a greater developer base can provide. It will reinforce that Jetty will be a project that is truly independent and open, so that anyone who is currently writing code for Eclipse, or would like to contribute, can work on the project. All current users and other projects consuming Jetty will continue to maintain their current rights and will continue to have future versions of Jetty available under the Apache License 2.0 as well as Eclipse Public License. In terms of development, the move will help Jetty be used more by OSGi projects.
Jetty is a web and application server and servlet container that is written in Java and is one of the top 15 web servers according to Netcraft.com. It is used as a web and application server for rich internet and embedded applications. Jetty has already been a key runtime component with credibility, so it will add to Eclipse’s runtime environment portfolio, an area which Eclipse has been focusing on over the past year. In addition, Webtide has a great relationship with many other open source projects, and the move will improve both companies’ brands and exposure within their respective communities.
Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director of the Eclipse Foundations, said “Webtide and the Jetty community have done a fantastic job creating solid technology and a vibrant community. We are honored they are proposing to bring Jetty to Eclipse. This will add world-class runtime technology to the Eclipse runtimes initiative and create greater awareness for Jetty in the Eclipse community.”
Adam Lieber, CEO of Webtide, added “The Eclipse Foundation is one of the largest organizations dedicated to open source software, and we will be proud for Jetty to be a project. We’ve always been committed to being open. With the move to Eclipse, customers can be assured that Jetty’s current roster of main contributors will continue full steam, and be joined by more developers to advance it more rapidly. This move will allow us to focus development energies and further bring out Jetty’s embedding strengths. It will also create more awareness for Eclipse and Jetty and both will become stronger as a result.”
Andy Pflaum, Zimbra VP of Business Development, said “Zimbra is excited about Jetty joining the Eclipse project, Jetty has proved to be a scalable and reliable component of Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop. We look forward to even more innovations to help us continue our mission providing best-in-class email and collaboration to millions of users.”
