Zilog Announces New LED Lighting Reference Design with ZAURA™ RF Technology Control and Featuring Advanced MCU and Wireless Technology

Milpitas CA, Biel Switzerland, Zilog, an IXYS Company (NASDAQ “IXYS”), and the legendary supplier of microcontrollers (MCUs), today introduces an LED Lighting solution that can be used as a basis for developing systems that can control LED lighting installations. This LED Driver with ZAURA Control Reference Design integrates a ZAURA RF 868 MHz Wireless Module and an LED Driver Base Power Board to create an LED Driver Demonstration Board designed to showcase the features and performance of an inductor-based light-emitting diode (LED) driver featuring active power factor correction (PFC) and a microcontroller (MCU).

The LED Driver Base Power Board can function on its own as a demonstration board, providing current to power an LED string. Because it is the source of PWM pulses, attaching the ZAURA RF Module provides LED brightness control; this pulse generation is performed by the Module’s Z8F2480 MCU.

This Board and Module combination is controlled by a hand-held remote control device which enables RF communication to turn LEDs on and off and to adjust the brightness of these LEDs within a 10%–100% range. To prevent damage to the LEDs in the event of overheating, the microcontroller can monitor the temperature of an LED board, decreasing the brightness of the LEDs if the temperature of the board exceeds a preset threshold. For purposes of demonstrating RF control, the hand-held ZAURA RF Remote Control device is included. This reference design solution also provides documentation that allows lighting designers to quickly get started with development.

The ZAURA modules in this reference design are shipped preloaded with a demo program which includes a command line interpreter for RF control of the modules via the UART. The ZAURA Module features many interface options including two four-wire UART ports, an I2C Controller, and 27 general-purpose port pins, plus an 8-channel 10-bit ADC.
