This award winning 12 slot 3U OpenVPX backplane (12 payload +2 power supply slots) supports the defense industry’s h/w and s/w convergence initiatives for modular open architecture systems. It is an integration platform for VPX modules addressing the Department of Defense CMOSS (C4ISR Modular Open Suite of Standards) initiatives. In supporting CMOSS compliant VPX modules, it enables major advancements in the level of standardization and module commonality among the various branches of the DoD.

In a typical battle-ready vehicle today, there are a growing number of separate chassis supporting functions such as software defined radio (SDR), remote sensing electronics, radar and other electronic countermeasures. Many of these systems have multiple external RF and digital sensors such as antennas.

This backplane, with its support for VITA 66.4 optical, 67.1 RF and VITA 67.3 RF/optical modules was developed to allow the integration of different instruments into the same chassis so they can share common sensors and communicate directly to each other – eliminating much external cabling.

This results in reduced size, weight and power consumption (SWaP) by the elimination of redundant unique hardware components such as cooling systems, power supplies and control consoles. This will allow lower life cycle costs, enable rapid insertion of new technologies and reduce development time for complex, high speed signal processing systems.


  • Slot profiles as defined in MOSA, VICTORY, MORA, VITA 49, VITA 65, HOST, FACE, SOSA and RedHawk Linux
  •  Supports 1000BASE-BX, 10GBASE-KX, 10GBASE-KR, or 40GBASE-KR4 connectivity
  •  VITA 66.4 optical, 67.1 RF and VITA 67.3 RF/Optical modules
  •  Supports IEEE 1588 precision timing protocol with a radial clock card slot and seven supporting slots for sub-microsecond network timing and synchronization
  •  Slots 13 and 14 for two VITA 62 power supplies.
