As an early option for data organization, the FAT file system attained a certain ubiquity. Windows CE can be an attractive alternative to the full Windows operating system offering system designers the ability to control power, size, and cost in a new product. The runtime license cost of the CE operating system alone can save as much as $150 over the license cost for standard Windows. Additionally, the componentized nature of CE is recognized as more stable and reliable than the Windows for desktop machines.
The heart of the FPGA concept is programmability. This capability provides a virtually limitless choice of possibilities to designers for implementing circuits that would otherwise require many discrete components. The result is a more capable and adaptable design, reduced PCB size, and reduced cost.
"Industrial computer" is a widely used term that unfortunately can be quite ambiguous, often applied to computers that may outwardly appear "rugged", but have little real advantage over commercial PCs. However, there are many applications that need a computer system that is truly built to a higher standard.
