Linux Customer Success Snapshots

Many companies offer “solutions” for developing device software. Only one Device Software Optimization (DSO) company goes beyond piecemeal product and service offerings. Wind River delivers complete application-enabling Linux platforms, Eclipse-based tools, expert support, and global service capabilities. We offer solutions for the automotive, networking, mobile handset, consumer, industrial, and aerospace and defense (A&D) markets. Read how several leading, innovative companies are leveraging Wind River Linux platforms to stay ahead in the explosive device marketplace.

Bluesocket

Bluesocket, a leading wireless and mobility solutions company, experienced challenges using a roll-your-own (RYO) Linux solution. The Bluesocket development team turned to Wind River Platform for Network Equipment, Linux Edition and was able to launch a stable, reliable, and differentiated product—ahead of schedule and under budget.

“In our first year, we’ve already seen a complete return on our investment and more. Wind River offers a three-for-one return on the money … Wind River has helped us make a quantum leap in our development efforts.”

— Tom Guevin Chief Technical Engineer Bluesocket

HUGHES Telematics

HUGHES Telematics selected Wind River to provide the foundation for its next-generation telematics architecture. HUGHES’ telematics control unit (TCU) will deliver information to drivers using Wind River Linux; Wind River Hypervisor, which enables hardware virtualization; and Wind River Professional Services. Wind River’s solution will reduce development and hardware costs and increase the system’s functionality.

“Wind River was able to provide HUGHES Telematics with a growth path for future innovative products by coupling commercial Linux with automotive-specific extensions and virtualization technology, along with deep industry expertise.”

— Erik Goldman President HUGHES Telematics

Honeywell Aerospace

On a quest to create a powerful, resilient commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) technology that would fare well in space, NASA turned to Honeywell Aerospace. Honeywell relied upon Wind River Platform for Networking Equipment, Linux Edition to meet the stringent requirements of the NASA project while also saving development time and costs.

“Honeywell is pleased to work with Wind River in the development of our Dependable Multiprocessor … the application of Dependable Multiprocessor technology is expected to yield benefits for years to come, particularly in the reduction of development time, cost, and risk of future space systems.”

— Dr. John R. Samson Jr. Principal Engineering Fellow Honeywell Defense and Space

AMX

AMX offers hardware and software solutions spanning control and automation, switching, distributed audio and video, and technology management. After years of satisfaction and savings with Wind River Platform for Consumer Devices, VxWorks Edition, the company is moving from a roll-your-own (RYO) Linux solution to Wind River Linux for its entire AMX Touch Panel product line.

“We performed an ROI analysis and believe we can conservatively save $1 million to $2 million over the next two years with Wind River Linux. Standardizing on one toolset across the company is very powerful from a cost-saving and productivity standpoint.”

— Rick Gelling Director of Firmware Engineering AMX

Vehicle Infrastructure Integration Consortium (VIIC)

The VIIC is a group of eight automotive manufacturers supporting a feasibility evaluation sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The evaluation will determine the viability of deploying a nationwide infrastructure to support vehicleto- roadway and vehicle-to-vehicle communications. To test standards for vehicle hardware and software, the consortium selected Wind River General Purpose Platform, Linux Edition.

“We selected Wind River because it offers a commercial-grade, well-supported Linux software platform and the ability to deliver hardware support. The company’s deep automotive embedded system knowledge and breadth and depth of products, services, and support offered us a complete, low-risk solution.”

— David Henry President VII Consortium

Airvana

Airvana, a leading mobile broadband infrastructure provider, wanted to enter new markets within the IP-enabled telecommunications infrastructure. Wind River Platform for Network Equipment, Linux Edition helped the company develop a powerful, fully integrated COTS solution with more time to focus on competitive differentiation, reduced development cost and risk, and shorter time-to-revenue.

“Maximizing the efficiency of our global development teams enables us to remain agile while also keeping project costs down. Standardizing on Wind River’s Eclipse-based development environment allows us to easily move engineers from project to project with minimal ramp-up time.”

— Frank Chen Vice President of Engineering Strategy and Architecture Airvana
