Emerson Network Power adds 40GbE and AC Power to Groundbreaking Two-Slot ATCA Platform

Santa Clara, Calif. [October 27, 2009] – Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson (NYSE:EMR) and the global leader in enabling Business-Critical Continuity™, today announced the next generation of its award-winning Centellis 2000 AdvancedTCA® (ATCA®) platform at the AdvancedTCA® Summit 2009. Now with support for 40GbE and AC power natively, the new 2-slot Centellis 2000 provides equipment manufacturers and system integrators with a scalable, cost-effective solution to support high-bandwidth applications in the telecom central office and beyond.

The Centellis 2000 now features a 40GbE “KR-Ready” backplane, which allows for 40Gbps communication directly between the two ATCA blades. It is fully compatible with Emerson Network Power’s existing 40GbE, 10GbE and 1GbE ATCA platforms, enabling enhanced system and network scalability. Backwards compatibility and future-proof infrastructure provides customers with assurance in their investment combined with a clear migration path to larger 40GbE platforms such as Emerson’s Centellis 4440.

“With the release of the next generation Centellis 2000 platform, Emerson Network Power is uniquely positioned to help customers future-proof their infrastructures while also preserving compatibility with existing off-the-shelf technologies to alleviate the trouble of costly forklift upgrades,” said Eric Heikkila, director embedded hardware and systems, VDC Research Group. “In addition to spearheading the industry’s push toward 40GbE architectures, this announcement solidifies Emerson’s commitment to broaden the reach of ATCA technology reach into high-performance communications applications beyond the telecom central office.”

“Using this technology, it is possible to upgrade to 40GbE capable payload blades in the future without replacing the shelf infrastructure,” said Rob Pettigrew, director of marketing for Emerson Network Power’s Embedded Computing business. “This is becoming increasingly important as data plane applications start migrating to ATCA-based platforms. As processor technology advances in line with 40Gbps bandwidth capability, heat dissipation is one of the industry’s largest challenges, so the thermal characteristics of the Centellis 2000 are critical. It is designed to meet the CP-TA B.4 thermal profile, the highest level possible.”

The Centellis 2000 is designed for a wide range of data-intensive, carrier-grade and network data center applications, including distributed control plane functions, IMS / IPTV subsystems, 4G wireless applications, and edge networking and routing. The platform’s low-profile also makes it an ideal solution for distributed networking functions, low density subscriber areas or other specialized applications. Adding a native AC power input option to the DC power input enables the Centellis 2000 to be used beyond telecom central offices in environments that may be found in network-centric, military, aerospace, broadcast, scientific experimentation, medical and process control markets. Power modules can also be installed singularly or with redundancy, enabling equipment manufacturers to balance energy-efficiency requirements with the appropriate levels of system reliability and network uptime.
