In 2017, we saw an important choice in adopting Power Amplifier Module integrated Duplexers (PAMiDs) that distinguished high-end and mid-range smartphones. Today, the distinction between these categories is becoming wider as companies work towards fifth generation (5G) wireless communication protocols. High-end OEMs are seeking new ways to integrate more capabilities into one device, which creates space on printed circuit boards for 5G components in the future.

At the same time, isolation techniques for all front-end communication devices are getting better, in a market with high-quality competitors. Qualcomm’s RF360 design is changing the entire mobile RF industry revolutionarily. GaAs PA is facing a fierce attack from CMOS PA. Qualcomm’s CMOS PA subverts the opinion that CMOS PA can only be used on low-end phones. Specifically for CMOS PA, Qualcomm designs QFE1100, which is a front-end module involved with envelope tracking technology. QFE1100 can help CMOS PA improve thermal efficiency, reduce heat by 30% and cut down power consumption by 20%.

ZTE’s flagship mobile phone Grand S II LTE uses Qualcomm’s CMOS PA —— QFE2320 and QFE2340 for the first time. The combination of QFE2320 and QFE2340 can cover all major cellular modes, including LTE TDD / FDD, WCDMA / HSPA +, CDMA 1x, TD-SCDMA and GSM / EDGE, with the RF band of 700MHz to 2700MHz. Qualcomm has basically monopolized smartphone Modem or CPU markets, and may dominate the PA field. However, mobile phone vendors will still cooperate with GaAs PA suppliers in order to ensure their equal status.

Nevertheless, the focus of mobile RF industry has been shifting from PA to filter. In the 4G era, the most valuable part of mobile RF system is filter, especially BAW, rather than PA. The biggest difference between 4G and 3G lies in BAW which is an essential part for 4G. A regional LTE phone needs a BAW valued USD1.25, a SAW worth USD2.25 and a PA which only costs USD1.75. As for a global roaming LTE phone, a SAW tagged with USD3, a BAW with USD3.5 and a PA with USD2 are required.

The biggest event in the RF industry in 2014 must be RFMD’s takeover on Triquint. Triquint suffered consecutive losses in 2012-2013; in Q1 2014, its revenue fell by 3.6% year on year, and its operating margin was negative 11.3% (negative 18.8% in the same period of previous year, negative 3.2 % in the fourth quarter of previous year). The company’s losses were mainly attributed to the aggressive capacity expansion (as much as seven manufacturing centers) before 2011 and excessive expectations. Additionally, Triquint showed serious dependence on large customers, particularly 57% of its revenue came from Apple. On the contrary, RFMD just went out of its predicament. RFMD placed undue reliance on its client NOKIA in its early years, but it witnessed poor performance in 2011-2012 under the impact of NOKIA. However, RFMD recovered in 2013 and its operating revenue increased substantially. RFMD took a fancy to Triquint’s BAW technology.

GaN will Push Microwave RF Power Semiconductor Market to Over $250 Million by 2018

Spending on microwave RF power semiconductors has been kick-started by the availability of new gallium nitride (GaN) devices for 4 to 18 GHz. Point-to-point communications, SATCOM, radars of all types and new industrial/medical applications will all benefit by the introduction of these high-power GaN devices, finds market intelligence firm ABI Research.

“While gallium arsenide devices are presently the backbone of microwave RF power it is gallium nitride that will drive growth going forward,” notes research director Lance Wilson. “GaN can operate at much higher voltages and at power levels that were difficult or impossible to reach using GaAs.”

In addition to the above mentioned application segments, microwave GaN is finally reaching the performance points that can start to seriously challenge travelling wave tube applications for new designs that have historically used the latter.

Despite Downturn in 2012, RF Power Amplifier Sales for Wireless Infrastructure Should Top $2.4B, Says ABI Research

Although 2012 turned out to be an off year for RF power amplifiers and devices for wireless infrastructure the market still held its own. The current year should be viewed as a breathing space before both segments resume stable and moderate growth after an explosive 2011.

The Asia-Pacific Region, including Japan, continues to account for over 75% of the RF power semiconductor devices that are sold into the mobile wireless infrastructure segment. According to research director Lance Wilson, “For the foreseeable future the Asia-Pacific region, particularly China, will remain the most important region and focus for RF power amplifiers and high-power RF devices for wireless infrastructure.”

Despite the off year RF power amplifier sales for wireless infrastructure will top $2.4B and RF power device sales will be over $600M.

LTE will become an increasingly important factor in both of these businesses even though the rollout has not been as rapid as the industry would like. Nevertheless, it is already worldwide in scope. “Although LTE has not significantly impacted RF power amplifier and device sales as of yet,” says Wilson, “it is going to bolster RF power sales in the wireless infrastructure space from 2012 on.”
